The SISTER project consortium successfully organised a Special Session on ‘Satellite Communication at the Service of ITS’ at the 15th ITS World Congress in New York. Chaired by ERTICO, speakers of the session included Graham Peters and Adam Brzozowski from AVANTI communication, with the SISTER coordinator presenting results of the project on market opportunities for satellite communication in ITS and current technical development. Doug Kolom, global formats manager of ERTICO Partner Navteq, presented a map maker’s view on the use of satellite communication for map updates.

Jon Gilbert from Blue Sky Network, a pioneer in the use of satellite communication in fleet management and other transport applications, spoke of his experience in using satellite communication in the transport sector. Randolf Wöhrl from Solaris Mobile Ltd presented the potential applications in ITS of the forthcoming pan-European S-Band service. As a new topic in the ITS World Congress, the session attracted an audience of 50 interested attendants, who took part in the lively and insightful discussion.

The Satcoms In Support of Transport on European Roads (SISTER) project will promote the integration of satellite and terrestrial communications with GALILEO to enable mass market take-up by road transport applications.

The scale of the road transport market combined with innovative solutions to road transport problems requiring the integration of location based services with communications makes this market potentially extremely attractive.

SISTER will establish how satellite communications can be used as part of the operational implementation of ITS applications. SISTER will NOT perform research into the development of NEW applications but will investigate how the operation of satellite affects the operation of such services. SISTER will build on and complement the large volume of work already performed in this field in ESA, EU and GJU projects.

GALILEO is based on a constellation of 30 satellites and ground stations providing information concerning the positioning of users in many sectors such as transport, etc.
