SISTER at the 16th ITS World Congress, Stockholm!

Dr Yanying Li, Project Manager at ERTICO, chaired the session “Satellite communication for ITS - the state of the art and beyond” on Wednesday 23rd September 2009 at the 16th ITS World Congress, Stockholm. With the SISTER project now nearing completion, the session was an excellent opportunity to hear the latest developments and thoughts from key consortium members on satellite communication and how the SISTER project has advanced knowledge in this field. Dr Stephane Dreher from NAVTEQ, Robert Laxing from VTEC and Graham Peters from Avanti Communications, all SISTER Partners, outlined the outcomes of the SISTER project.
Dr. Stephane Dreher explained SISTER’s findings in delivering map updates via satcom, based on a number of different user profiles (lond-distance lorry driver, week-day commuter etc).
Robert Laxing demonstrated how the in-vehicle emergency call (eCall) service is able to operate also in remote area with weak or no GSM signal using satcom in a variety of scenarios, thus potentially saving lives through the quick and accurate dispatch of emergency services.
Graham Peters outlined the SISTER project, with special emphasis on the lessons learnt and future steps.
In addition, Charles Link, Chief Technology Officer of Hughes Telematics, USA, and Boundewijn Schokker from Logica gave presentations on the application of satellite communication in American and European markets respectively, thus rounding off the session.

SISTER at Stockholm ITS World Congress!
Following a very successful special session at the 15th ITS World Congress in 2008 in New York, the SISTER project organises another special interest session at the 16th ITS World Congress. The session, SIS47 “Satellite communication for ITS - the state of the art and beyond” will be held on Wednesday 23rd Sept from 9:00 – 10:30 in Room A7 Scania Room. The session will be chaired by Dr Yanying Li from ERTICO. Dr. Stephane Dreher from NAVTEQ, Robert Laxing from VTEC and Graham Peters from Avanti Communications, all SISTER Partners, will give a presentation on the outcomes of the SISTER project. The SISTER consortium has also invited external speakers to present the current application of satellite communication in the ITS market. Mr Charles Link, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Hughes Telematics, USA, will also give a presentation on application of satellite communication in American market. Boundewijn Schokker from Logica will present current development of European market.
SISTER was presented at Fully Networked Car Workshop at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show
The event was held on 4 and 5 March 2009 at one of the world's leading automotive events, the Geneva International Motor Show, in Switzerland. For the fourth year running, a major event focusing on information and communication technologies (ICT) in motor vehicle was organised by ISO, IEC and ITU, working together as the World Standards Cooperatation (WSC). The workshop brought together key specialists in the field, from top decision-makers to engineers, designers, planners, goverment officials, regulators, standards experts and others.

SISTER at the 15th ITS World Congress in New York
The SISTER project consortium successfully organised a Special Session on ‘Satellite Communication at the Service of ITS’ at the 15th ITS World Congress in New York. Chaired by ERTICO, speakers of the session included Graham Peters and Adam Brzozowski from AVANTI communication, with the SISTER coordinator presenting results of the project on market opportunities for satellite communication in ITS and current technical development. Doug Kolom, global formats manager of ERTICO Partner Navteq, presented a map maker’s view on the use of satellite communication for map updates.
Jon Gilbert from Blue Sky Network, a pioneer in the use of satellite communication in fleet management and other transport applications, spoke of his experience in using satellite communication in the transport sector. Randolf Wöhrl from Solaris Mobile Ltd presented the potential applications in ITS of the forthcoming pan-European S-Band service. As a new topic in the ITS World Congress, the session attracted an audience of 50 interested attendants, who took part in the lively and insightful discussion.

Download the SISTER Flyer!
The Satcoms In Support of Transport on European Roads (SISTER) project will promote the integration of satellite and terrestrial communications with GALILEO to enable mass market take-up by road transport applications.
The scale of the road transport market combined with innovative solutions to road transport problems requiring the integration of location based services with communications makes this market potentially extremely attractive.
SISTER will establish how satellite communications can be used as part of the operational implementation of ITS applications. SISTER will NOT perform research into the development of NEW applications but will investigate how the operation of satellite affects the operation of such services. SISTER will build on and complement the large volume of work already performed in this field in ESA, EU and GJU projects.
