The Satcoms In Support of Transport on European Roads (SISTER) project will promote the integration of satellite and terrestrial communications with GALILEO to enable mass market take-up by road transport applications.

The scale of the road transport market combined with innovative solutions to road transport problems requiring the integration of location based services with communications makes this market potentially extremely attractive.

SISTER will establish how satellite communications can be used as part of the operational implementation of ITS applications. SISTER will NOT perform research into the development of NEW applications but will investigate how the operation of satellite affects the operation of such services. SISTER will build on and complement the large volume of work already performed in this field in ESA, EU and GJU projects.

GALILEO is based on a constellation of 30 satellites and ground stations providing information concerning the positioning of users in many sectors such as transport, etc.
